The All-Electric Mitsubishi ASX VR-e Is Coming to New Zealand
August 20, 2026 1:17 pm
Mitsubishi is getting ready to plug into the next chapter of electric driving, with the all-new ASX VR-e arriving in New Zealand later this year.
Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has confirmed that the all-electric Mitsubishi ASX VR-e will arrive in Q4 2026, adding a fully battery-electric SUV to an already growing range of electrified Mitsubishi vehicles.
For drivers who have been thinking about making the move to electric, but still want the familiarity, practicality and backing of a well-established automotive brand, the ASX VR-e is one to watch.
A new era for the ASX
The ASX name has been part of Mitsubishi’s SUV story for years. Now, it’s taking a significant step into the future.
The new ASX VR-e is a fully electric battery electric vehicle (BEV), giving Mitsubishi customers another option when it comes to choosing how they want to power their next vehicle.
It also follows the recently announced Outlander Sport HEV, adding another electrified model to Mitsubishi’s New Zealand line-up alongside the popular Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV.
That means Mitsubishi is building a range that gives Kiwi drivers more choice — whether you’re looking for a plug-in hybrid, hybrid or fully electric vehicle.
Performance meets electric power
The ASX VR-e range will be available across LS, XLS, Exceed and GSR grades, with the range-topping GSR bringing a performance-focused flavour to Mitsubishi’s new electric SUV.
While Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand has yet to release full New Zealand specifications, pricing and detailed model information, the arrival of a GSR version gives us a pretty good indication that this won’t simply be an electric SUV designed to get you from A to B.
It’s designed to bring some excitement along for the ride too.
Designed with some serious expertise
The ASX VR-e has been developed through a partnership involving Pininfarina, the renowned Italian design house, and Foxtron, an EV manufacturer.
That’s an interesting combination.
Pininfarina brings decades of automotive design heritage, while Foxtron brings expertise in electric vehicle technology and manufacturing. Together with Mitsubishi’s own experience, the ASX VR-e represents a new direction for the brand as it continues expanding its electrified range.
Mitsubishi and electric vehicles aren’t new
While the ASX VR-e might be new, Mitsubishi’s experience with electrification certainly isn’t.
Mitsubishi introduced the i-MiEV to New Zealand in 2011, one of the country’s earliest mass-production electric vehicles.
It then helped bring plug-in hybrid technology into the mainstream with the Outlander PHEV, which has become a familiar sight on New Zealand roads.
The ASX VR-e is therefore the next step in a journey Mitsubishi started well over a decade ago.
What does the ASX VR-e mean for Kiwi drivers?
Electric vehicle technology is evolving quickly, but choosing an EV isn’t just about what’s under the bonnet.
For many New Zealand drivers, it’s about finding the right balance between technology, practicality, lifestyle and confidence in the brand behind the vehicle.
That’s where the ASX VR-e could be particularly interesting.
Mitsubishi has an established dealer and service network across New Zealand, meaning customers aren’t simply buying into a new technology — they’re buying it from a brand with decades of experience supporting Kiwi motorists.
For drivers considering their first EV, that familiarity could make the transition a whole lot easier.
